TANK (our reporter):- The unidentified gunmen fired on the polio team and two police personnel the were martyred in Tank District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday.

According to the local officials, the polio campaign was going on in the area. The two unidentified who was hiding near a small water channel in Kot Azam, Tank, opened fired on the polio team from a very close range.

Sources said that the unidentified gunmen has targeted police personnel and spared the two-member polio vaccination team and fled on a motorbike.

Polio workers and security officials guarding them have been killed since 2012 by militants.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries where the virus hasn’t been eradicated. In April, Pakistan reported the first case of polio in 15 months. Since then 14 polio more cases have been reported.

In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack on a polio team in Tank, saying the enemies of the health of the nation’s young generation would be strongly dealt with.

He expressed sympathies with the policemen who lost lives in the line of duty and said the nation paid tribute to the great sacrifices rendered by police.

PM Shehbaz said those involved in the attacks on the polio team wanted to make the children of the country suffer from disabilities due to the crippling disease.

He vowed to eliminate the persons pursuing such agenda and nefarious designs against the young generation.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information and Broadcasting Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif commented on the incident and said that the incident intended to disrupt peace talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). 

He said that the anti-TTP groups did not want the peace talks between the banned group and the government.

“Incidents of extortion and attacks on police were happening to make the dialogues fail,” said the leader while talking to journalists. He said that the representatives of the banned organisation engaged in talks with sincerity.
