ISLAMABAD (Eshfak Mughal):- The Federal Cabinet has adopted the National Hazardous Waste Management Policy 2022 on Tuesday.
The Cabinet met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif here in Islamabad. The meeting has approved the National Hazardous Waste Management Policy to dispose off the wastage through environmentally friendly ways.
Under the policy, imports of plastics and other hazardous electronic materials will be limited by license.
Pakistan annually imports 80,000 tons of hazardous waste from abroad which is increasing not only the risk of human life but it is damaging rivers, water resources and natural resources.
The plastic and other wastage in Pakistan is 60,000 tons while the imported waste is many times more than that.
The Federal Govt will hold consultation with provinces to promote environmentally friendly, under the Policy. A national action plan would be formulated to ensure 100% implementation of the policy in next phase.
Many of our industrial sectors and private companies are involved in the import of dangerous wastage which needs to be regulated. A national framework will be formulated in three months after which the policy will be fully implemented.
The capacity of environmental protection agencies at the national and provincial levels would be enhanced and legislation would be enacted at the provincial level on a regular basis.
The Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman said that the waste is very deadly and harmful to human health, so detailed consultations have been held with all the provinces under this policy. She said that there was an urgent need for this policy to protect the environment in the country which has been implemented after a long time.
Sherry Rehman said the policy would be helpful in GSP Plus, which would also have far-reaching consequences for the economy.
Replying to a question, the Federal Minister said that we have launched a comprehensive project on which further progress will be made in the next phase.
Federal Minister Sherry Rehman said that the steps are being taken on an urgent basis regarding waste management as a systematic and integrated policy on hazardous waste is essential for the protection of the environment.
She said that the citizens should also fulfill their responsibilities to improve the environment.
