NEW DELHI (News Desk) The Indian Police has arrested Muhammad Zubair, co-founder of the leading fact-check news website Alt News for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments after spreading blasphemy statements by senior leaders of the Indian ruling party Bhartia Janta Party.

Indian police has obtained his remand for one day from duty magistrate at late night.

Muhammad Zubair is a leading journalist in India and his name is known for checking fake news and spreading awareness among the people.

Mohammad Zubair was in the news recently after former Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nopur Sharma committed blasphemy against the Prophet of Muhammad (PBUH) on a TV channel and shared the news on Twitter.

It may be recalled that BJP leader Nopur Sharma, who had commented on the Prophet of Islam, had claimed that he had been receiving death threats since Muhammad Zubair’s tweets.

Muhammad Zubair has repeatedly presented fake material and news to the public which was based on hatred and was against a certain class and in most cases anti-Muslim.

Following the news of Zubair’s arrest, Alt News co-founder Pratik Sinha wrote in a statement: “Zubair was summoned to the Delhi Special Cell today for questioning. The case dates back to 2020 and Zubair had secured pre-arrest bail from the High Court. However, at 7.30 pm today, we were informed that he had been arrested in another case, for which he had not been given any notice which is required by law.

He further wrote that despite his repeated requests, he was not provided a copy of the FIR on the basis of which Muhammad Zubair was arrested.

On the other hand, according to Delhi Police DCP KP Malhotara, he has been arrested as there is reasonable evidence against Muhammad Zubair on record. He is now being produced before a duty magistrate for remand.

After the arrest of Muhammad Zubair, there has been a strong reaction on social media.

Indian Opposition Political party Indian Congress member Shashi Tharoor wrote in a tweet that “India’s new fact-checking services, especially Alt News, in an environment full of fake news and misinformation, disprove this lie, even if it is false.” Information spread by anyone. The arrest of Muhammad Zubair is an attack on the truth.  Zubair should be released immediately. “

It may be recalled that last month, extremist Hindu group was demanding legal action against Ahmed Zubair after a diplomatic crisis erupted over remarks made by former members of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on the Prophet of Islam.

Muhammad Zubair was one of the first to highlight these comments made by BJP leaders on social media.

The comments made by BJP leaders regarding the Prophet of Islam went viral on social media about a week later when Muhammad Zubair posted them on his Twitter account and since then Hindu right wing members have taken action against him.
