ISLAMABAD:- (Eshfak Mughal):- The government is preparing a plan to phased increase the electricity prices by Rs8 to Rs24.82 per unit phased wise from next months for revival of the stalled loan program of International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Sources in the Power Division, the preparations are underway to increase the power tariff after petroleum prices as per agreement with IMF in Feb 2022 by previous PTI government led by IMF.

According to sources in Power Division, from July 1, 2022, the price of electricity will be increased by Rs 3.50 per unit from Rs 16.91 to Rs 20.41 per unite.

The electricity prices will be also increased by Rs 3.5 per unit in August. The basic electricity tariff will be increased to Rs.20.41 per unite to Rs 23.91 per unit from 1st Aug 2022.

According to sources, the basic electricity tariff will be further increased by 91 paisa per unit from October 1, 2022. According to the plan, the price of electricity will be surged from Rs.24.82 per unit from 1st Oct 2022.

Sources said that the increase would not apply to the consumers who consume 200 units or less of electricity per month.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has recommended that the government should withdraw the facility of free power supply to WAPDA employees and allowance should be paid.

Chairman PAC Noor Alam Khan said that the bill is being collected from 10 to 15 thousand salaried employees while the free electricity is being provided to WAPDA employees.

The Secretary Energy said that 8 million consumers are getting subsidy on electricity from the government. In one year, the power system caused a loss of Rs. 1100 billion.

The chair directed that if the CEO of K-Electric do not come in the next meeting, he should be arrested and presented in the committee.

The Secretary Energy said that the electricity distribution companies must come up with proposals to withdraw the facility of free electricity. There is a difference of more than one trillion rupees in the power sector between recovery and subsidy. Every government appoints its own people on the board of directors.
