ISLAMABAD:- The Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Thursday that new coalition government will reverse the State Bank of Pakistan Autonomy law which was passed by the PTI government under the condition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Minister has given the statement when Finance Minister is on they way to join talks with the IMF for revival of the loan program of $6 billion.

It could be difficult to say about the impact of the statement on the ongoing dialogue for getting one billion dollar immediately but this is irresponsible and unnecessary state by irrelevant minister.

Finance Minister already gave statement that the new government will honor the agreement of last government.

But Asif, during a tv interview said he still believes the laws that the previous government amended the State Bank of Pakistan Act 1956 to meet the IMF’s conditions were still wrong and needed to be reserved.

The Defence Minister said former prime minister Imran Khan had “sold out” Pakistan’s economic sovereignty to the United States, as the country has the most shares in the IMF.

“IMF is an institution in which America has a lot of stakes. Imran Khan sold out our economic sovereignty to them by handing over our central bank to the IMF,” he said.

The Defence Minister said the coalition government would reverse the move and reestablish Pakistan’s economic sovereignty, but noted that the central bank would be given independence when it comes to the monetary policy.

On a query, he said that he will definitely ask Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to do so.

On the future of Governor SBP Reza Baqir, The Defence Minister said that Baqir would retire on his designated date and the government has no plans of retaining him.

When the National Assembly was discussing the SBP bill in December last year, the Defence Minister, who was in the Opposition then,` had said the sovereignty of Pakistan was being sold.

“The nation is ashamed of what is happening in the House today,” he had said on the floor of the National Assembly. He further said that the PTI-led government is trying to “enslave Pakistanis financially.”
